Hello and Welcome!
I’m Donna Henderson, the creator and writer of ‘A Little Bird Tweets’; a writing blog that specializes in my own, original flash fiction – namely of the psychological-thriller and psychological-horror sub-genres, but also touching on other genres such as Romance and Science-Fiction. I am a self-taught writer, and a published author. My flash fiction ‘Angel of Love’ is included in e-book ‘100 RPM – One Hundred Short Stories Inspired By Music’.
My flash fiction is aimed at readers who are avid fans of the psychological-thriller and psychological-horror genres; and readers who are curious about delving into the world of darker, twisted plots, where troubled characters often exist.
Flash fiction is designed to be read in a short space of time. With the popularity of the Internet and ebook, and with so many of us having busy lifestyles, this form of fiction is becoming widely popular among readers. I believe that it is important for peoples’ mental health to take regular breaks from the routine of everyday life; and what better way than to do it than to grab a tea or coffee break and delve into a story! Flash fiction has so many positive elements; it can introduce the reader to new ideas and knowledge; it can provoke new emotions in readers that has the power to change your thoughts in a day, or even a lifetime; it is an excellent form of entertainment that can be enjoyed in five minutes in a day or night.
The inspiration for my writing can come from anywhere and anything; from the lyrics of a sixties song to dialogue heard in strangers’ conversation – from the sounds of nature to the filming techniques used in a horror movie. A key technique I use to trigger ideas for my stories, is to identify a small key detail within a bigger idea such as an article, movie, lyric or painting, then magnify that key idea and develop it as my own through free-write – which I then go on to compress into the flash fiction art form. I often undertake classic creative writing exercises, such as word-webs and word-associations. This helps to develop my writing skills and keep my imagination flowing. Sometimes, the smallest exercises such as a five minute free-write has the potential to be developed into a bigger piece of flash fiction – such as a short story or a full length novel. I live with my partner Paul in a small town in the heart of Hertfordshire; a woody place where squirrels roam and woodpeckers drill. It is idyllic, beautiful and inspirational. I can sometimes be seen daydreaming on the balcony and conjuring up strange stories as I listen to the melodic sound of church bells chiming in the distance.
I am currently working on my first full length psychological-thriller novel and I am also undertaking a Diploma in Novel Writing.

You know, I lived in England, once. Cambridge. I’m clear over in West Virginia now, where I’m from. Your mentioning of where you’re from got me to thinking about that; the scenery isn’t much different–squirrels and trees. It is nice to be surrounded by nature when you write–or, at least, when you’re coming up with ideas to write. I’ve written stories on my (shitty) PHONE before. But having a place of recluse is essential to good writing. Can’t wait for your next piece 🙂
Oh, how funny, I know Cambridgeshire very well as my parents live in the Fenlands! I lived there also when I was 19, but moved to other places for study and work. Cambridge is truly beautiful and an inspirational place to live. I have not yet visited the US, but I have browsed around many places there on Google street view. I’ve been through the back roads of California, Elvis Presley Boulevard, Las Vegas – it’s great to see even in pictures 🙂 Thanks for your kind words on my writing, it’s much appreciated.

Hi Donna. I’ve just had a quick browse through some of your work and will pop back later to view some more. It’s interesting that you write so much flash fiction, but not in response to any challenge – apart from your own, of course. So, you must set your own tilles, themes and word-lengths? I’ve started doing several FF challenges on my blog – all different, with different word-lengths and so on. I find them quite addictive, although I really write historical fiction. The first two books of my trilogy are on Amazon.

Sometimes I plan to write a set number of words, while other times I just write and end up with a random word count. It all depends on if I can find the strength to lose words or keep them. “Flash Fiction”… what a good idea. First time I’ve come across the term. I love the concept but have to stay away from psychological-thrillers. They scare me… a little bit 🙂
Thank you! Yes, flash fiction is a great way to express an idea in a story without having to consider a longer piece. Psychological-thrillers can be scary – but I like nothing better than to get inside a characters head, and take them to their desperate limits in plot 🙂

Hope you had a great birthday, with lots of nice prezzies and family and friends to share your day. It’s my eldest daughter’s today (6th). She’s 42 – which, naturally, makes me feel ancient!. CreateSpace do print books for Amazon. You send them a pdf file of the text, to their specifications, and the cover – which needs to be the full jacket, not just the front, as for ebooks.I’m just waiting for my proof copy to arrive now.
As for my trilogy, I’ve more than half a book to write before I can call it that! 😀
I had a great day thanks. I spent the day with my fiance, who bought me tickets to see the Graceland exhibition at the 02 Greenwich. It showed all of Elvis’s possessions from Graceland which was fascinating. We also went to see The Kinks at the theatre! Happy Birthday to your daughter…I hope she had a great time.

Same here, Donna. One of my first short stories was about a woman, seemingly normal, murders her husband. As I look back on it the writing needs a lot of improvement, as does the plot. Novel writing definitely takes more commitment. I love the term, Flash Fiction — brilliant! We work on short timed sessions we call Freewriting, where we write and write and write for the designated period of time — then done. Of course, once we’ve written for 10, 20, or 30 minutes, we often find we could keep writing longer (and if we can, we do!). Fun blog 🙂
Flash fiction has an active and modern sound to it doesn’t it 🙂 I think the timed exercises really pull everything from the imagination; something we couldn’t achieve if we ponder over the page. It’s great that you have found a form that you love. And it’s amazing what you can find yourself typing after several minutes! Best Wishes with your writing. Hi Simon. Thank you so much. Yes, it’s great when inspiration comes from anywhere and anything. I find the most obvious change of mood in my writing will come with the change of the seasons. I shall look forward to following your work and your flash fictions. It’s a great format for capturing ideas and moments, and it really makes you think about every word, just like in poetry.
I always find I run out of words and end up starting a story that could be a novel or a mini novel lol. It’s good but also quite annoying.

How’s the novel going?
You’re very welcome. Yes flash fiction can definitely be a challenge. There have been times when I have sat down to write a short piece and it has ended up becoming a short story 🙂 The novel is getting there, but it still needs lots of work. How is your writing going this year?
Haha I can imagine – kudos for that, very impressed. My writing’s going well so far (touch wood). Auran Chronicles #2 is at the 60,000 word mark now so the end is in sight. Just working out optimum ways to plug #1 now so I’ve got a reasonable readership for when #2 comes out 🙂
Congratulations on achieving your word count, that’s great work! And to be thinking of two books at the same time is great too. I do need to step up a bit more with my writing, but I get into this habit of playing scenes out in my head before writing them. Best of luck with finishing your books. Thanks for stopping by my blog. Congrats on working on your first novel. I am as well. It’s definitely a challenge. I enjoy flash fiction and began to delve into it not long ago. My specialty is short story, which is what I’m currently working on as a break from my novel.
You’re welcome…thank you so mu h for visiting my blog too 🙂 Flash fiction is a wonderful form…a great way to capture those flickering ideas and moments. I think the longest short story I have written is around 1500 words. It is a wonderful form too and really tests your skills. Congrats on having a novel in deelopment too, that’s wonderful 🙂

I’ve never written but just got inspired while talking to my daughter on holiday and that was it! Joined in August and right now, can’t see I will be going anywhere soon!

It’s the best way to learn ‘as you go’. I love to read the ‘how to’ books and there was a time when I was addicted to learning the art of writing! I tend to get ideas from the novels that I read now. When I look back on some of my older work too, I’d likely edit them now. It is amazing how writer’s evolve 🙂
Thank you and I agree, we learn by doing! That’s interesting you say you learn from reading. I really should read more and looking to find some time to do this, I probably only manage to read a handful of books a year mainly to do with my busy family, work and now writing myself!
Maybe I should start a reviewing books I’m reading to get me more focused.
Sorry for the late reply…I haven’t been on WP for a while due to house move and pregnancy. Yes reading is really a great way to learn from writing…I think Stephen King swears by this method. I haven’t had much time to read lately but if I am reading a book I try at least a couple of pages a day 🙂
I aim for two chapters a night but rarely fit it in. I should make more time to read rather than watch TV!
Two chapters a night is a good goal. There are so many good things on TV these days, and it can also be inspiring for writing too 🙂
I’m liking a few dramas at the moment. I have s little bullet journal I write ideas down in.
