I turned a poem into a song…

Hi everyone!

I have been busy this year with learning to play the ukulele, making raw, acoustic cover songs and posting them on my You Tube Channel (Donna Darkle).

This week has seen my first attempt at turning a Victorian poem into a song, and I have posted a link below to the song. The poem is called Echo, which was written by Christina Rossetti in the late 1850s. Christina was a poet from the Pre-Raphaelite period, and her poems had recurring themes of love and devotion.

Echo is such a haunting and otherwordly poem. It is often translated as being about memory, longing and a voice returning from the past. When I wrote the melody and chord progression, I wanted to capture those melancholic emotions. I hope that comes across in the song.

I really enjoyed this creative process. I know many people use spoken word to background music, so I thought I would try something slightly different. This process helps me (a ukulele beginner) try to understand how words feel alongside chords – there are so many combinations and possibilities to discover along the experimenting journey. I do hope to do more of these so please stay tuned if you enjoy poetry adaptions. I believe this could well be the very first step in me actually writing my own words / lyrics and making original songs.

Thank you so much for listening, I really appreciate it. If you are able to subscribe on You Tube, that would be amazing. I will still post here too. Have a beautiful day and I will post again very soon.
